I just got this used mountain bike and every time I switch gears I have problems with it going into gear, and also when I do get it into the gear and pedal hard it pops and slips, is there any way I can fix this myself or shoud I take it to a shop?

Which number should it be places on so I can peddle at simple quick rate. I don’t plot to go up hill or anything just to and from school I live in a small college town where riding a bike is cheaper then pouring my car back and forth so I needed help to see which gear am I suppose place my bike in so I can peddle simpler but quick as well? Your help would be so much appreciated .

I have a 21 speed mountain bike, and something seems to be incorrect. As I am running through the gears and have the gear in front set up to the largest one, the amount of force I place in does not make sense. In the rear, gear one two and three gradually increase the amount of force necessary to go the pedals, but as a i shift from 4-7 it seems like it is back into gear one and i notice no change in difficulty.
any suggestions?
