How can I begin on my path to begin a japanese karate?

I wish to begin basic training for Karate, but I have no people near me that could teach me. I don’t have money for books, but I would like to start training for it.

There are no trees that I can hang from for pull ups. I have adjustable weights for arms. I have a mountain bike, and also an exercise bike. My parents would buy any exercise equipment that I’d need.

What are some exercises I can do for strength, stretches for flexibility, and techniques for gaining serenity and focus?

Im in the market for my first mountain bike. I have no idea what im looking for in a quality bike. This is something ive wanted to get into forever so im not afraid to spend the money on a good bike thats going to last and be able to handle all the trails i’ll see in the future. Should I get a full face helmet for mountain biking?

Got my first mountain bike, its a freeride/downhill. I have NO money or health insurance so I cannot afford to be off work due to injury but I dont want to look like im trying to be something im obviously not.(Kinda like the guys who buy Camo at the surplus store and pretend to be ex navy seals at the bar)

Will I look like a complete jackass if I get a full face helmet? I live in the south east and my area of the state is mostly flat other than the MTB park right next to me which has some pretty decent climbs/downhill.

Is a motorcross helmet the same thing as a MTB full face helmet? I understand its going to be hot but we are coming into fall so I dont forsee that as a huge issue. I just want the best protection while I learn what im doing.

Mountain Biking – Newbie Tips?

So I got tired of using my mountain bike I got for christmas on country roads. I hit the local nature reserve where one part features a load of jumps. It went well the first 4 times I went down the hill. The 5th time I face-planted, tearing up both my hands requiring bandages and splitting my helmet. My face is also all grazed and swollen.

At that point, covered in mud and dirt and blood I was scared. I was alive. I realised that this is what I wanted to do. I fell in love with a sport ive hardly tried.

So I am getting a friend who is in the same situation (mountain bike, but never used for mountain biking terrain) and we will (hopefully) be going on two-person rides through various nature reserves. I am going to do a BIT easier routes to get more used to it before going back to the one I nearly killed myself on.

So my question is this:

Any tips for a 17 year old who, with a friend, is about to enter the world of Mountain Biking?

I have a helmet and first aid kit, but thats about it as far as safety gear. Im saving up for more, but my family is not a wealthy family. We struggle. So its a bit difficult. I love my helmet though, as that face-plant would have killed me since the rock split my helmet open!

Always wear a helmet kids

Eventually I hope to get 2 more mates on board (ive put a facebook status to find anyone who is interested) and have ourselves a 4-man (well, boy lol) team.

Where and what in Pennsylvania should I see on a road trip around the state?

I’m planning a month long road trip around all of Pennsylvania. I’m doing this for a book, weblog, and possible tv show in the future.

My question is, where and what should I make a point to go see. I’m looking for all types of places. Touristy, non-touristy, haunted, myths, nature, beauty, unique, quirky, fun, everything. State parks, odd things, natural wonders, man made wonders, family restaurants, famous/infamous places, local neat things. I also would like to know of beautiful roads to take that aren’t just interstates, unless those interstates are beautiful. Remember, we’re going to be driving so it might as well be a nice drive. This isn’t just for places that you can drive right up to. Walking, hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, etc.. all included too. Also weird and strange road side attractions. Everything in PA, inch by inch.

The concept of the book is to group the states into regions and be as in depth as possible with what there is to do in those regions. I want to give anyone wanting to take a road trip in a particular part of the country the guide to not miss great things that might be right around the corner or right off of the interstates.

I’m also looking for interesting people. If you or someone you know in the area is a really special person let me know. I will also be in need of a place to stay sometimes and to interview and “feature” special families and people across the state. If you live in PA and would like to be featured in the book, email me at driveus@rocketmail.com I will also be looking for guides and/or specialists on certain areas. So if you are particularly interested and knowledgeable about your area that you live or something in PA, I’d love to talk to you and you will get credit in the books, and maybe face time on camera. so i’ve been going for 8-20 mile bike rides daily and my bike is just a really cheap mountain bike. i was told im using the wrong kind of bike. but i was also told that a road bike wouldn’t be good if im cycling on the sidewalk… what kind of bike should i be using?
i ride on the sidewalk because i live in a busy area and i ride on the sidewalks of main roads. way to be a smart ass and not help me at all.

What kind of helmet do I need for Mountain Biking?

I plan to get a really nice $200 mountain bike in the next couple of days, but I have really no idea what kind of helmet I’d need for Mountain biking. A few of my friends say that a regular bicycle helmet will work, but I am concerned that if I somehow fall of the bike, and hit my head on a tree, that a regular bike helmet would break.

I was thinking of getting one of those full face helmets, similar to those helmets that Dirt Bike riders wear. Is that okay, or is it completely unnecessary?

When I stretch out my arms which stretches out my chest I hear ripping sounds coming from my chest, and can feel stuff moving around in my chest. I have chest pain in the center of my chest from lifting heavy weights.

I was lifting a dresser up steps in the house, and it was loaded with books. I got it about half way up the steps, and lost all my strength in my arms, and my arms just fell to the sides of me. I didn’t want the dresser to fall especially since it was just me moving it. So I used my chest to hold it until I regained strength in my arms.

I was in a life or death accident about 5 years ago, and I couldn’t move my right leg for about 10-15 minutes, but never went to see a doctor or hospital after that accident even though it wasn’t my fault, and the people who hit me wanted to pay, and take me.

I’ve done a lot of jackass stunts since then too since I don’t have much feeling, and the one stunt I did was blew up a bottle in my hands, and couldn’t move or feel my hands for a while. I flipped a mountain bike off of a 4ft drop, and almost completed the flip, but had to dive out which I was told looked really cool. Another stunt I did was got some air on my mountain bike, jumped off of it, and landed back on it when it was on the ground.

Most the stunts I did my friends didn’t try cause they where dangerous stunts. Especially when I needed something to drink, and all that was near was snow on the ground so I grabbed some, and it tasted like gasoline which isn’t good for anybody, but I am still allive.

i don’t know what to get my family for christmas i need to get something for my mom dad and brother

my brother is and outdoors person he loves rock climbing bmx riding skateboarding and mountain biking. He is also into dubstep music and d.j ing. He is really particular about what he wears so clothes aren’t really an option, he’s 14 so what can you do.

my mom is really particular about clothes too (she is larger) she won’t where makeup and likes to shop at the thrift store (i don’t have a clue why were not poor at all). she likes to bake and walk other then that all she does is clean all day

my dad is into every thing bikes, EVERYTHING. he is constantly winning some competition so he must be good. He likes good books but only good book like the girl with the dragon tattoo, he read stephen hawking so maybe he’d like something similar. He also enjoys barbecuing work and spinnervals dvds.

I’m on a students budget so i can’t spend more then 50$ a present.

So I have the ladies Schwinn Sidewinder 26″ bicycle and I would love to get a rear rack for it. I do not know much about bikes but I know this is a mountain bike and I know people have problems with rear racks and mountain bikes. I cannot spend a ton and use this bike for commuting so it’s important that no matter what I put on the back it cannot be in anyway irritating. I don’t know what size racks I’m looking for but I think it is important to find out what I am looking for. It needs to be able to hold a small amount of groceries and several large text books. Any direction will help.

I recently got back in mountain biking and its about time i start wearing a helmet before something bad happens.I like the looks of the skateboarding style of helmet,and im not thrilled with the looks of the regular mountain bike helmets,do people ever wear the skating helmets on mountain bikes? I realize the looks are not whats important but if i dont like the way it looks i probably wont end up wearing it.I am not doing much extreme stuff on the bike so i dont need a full face helmet. can anyone suggest a helmet or any info to help me out, thanks a lot

I am going to write a book based off something that happened in my mother’s life. When my mother was in nursing school she met a guy named Mike who was a cancer patient in 1986. I changed some stuff and added things. The thing about the polaroid photo is true and how he was an avid hiker and he did write her the letters. Comment please and suggest a title!!

In the beginning a 23-year-old college student, Rory Blake, is working as a nurse in 1986. Rory has just gotten out of a bad abusive relationship with her ex Doug Fallows. One day at work Rory meets Mike Cadwell, a 26-year-old cancer patient. Mike has a very handsome face (he was a gorgeous guy who liked to hike and ride bikes through trails, very outdoorsy). But now Mike has lost all his hair through kemo and his cheeks are sunken in. They become friends as she takes care of him and Rory tells him all about her past relationship. Mike says that any guy would be lucky to have her. During the night Mike secretly writes love letters to her confessing that he is slowly falling in love with her. He also writes in the letters about how much he misses her when she leaves for the night and he is up at 4 am sick and throwing up from the effects of his treatment. Rory eventually learns that Mike’s cancer is getting worse and he has 6 months to live. Mike says that before he dies he wants to go hiking one last time (because of his cancer he has been too weak to hike anymore). The two hike to the top of a mountain and Rory takes a Polaroid photo of him. He writes on the back “thinking of my little strawberry on the mountaintop. Mike Cadwell -August 1986″ (Mike always said that Rory had a strawberry smile). As time goes by the two start to date and they have sex. Rory becomes pregnant with his child When the 6 months are coming near, Mike gets weaker and weaker. One day Rory goes to the hospital and finds that Mike is near dying. He gives her the letters he wrote to her before he dies and Rory tells him that they are
having a girl. Mike says the past 6 months have been the best of his life and tell their daughter that daddy loves her even though he never met her then he dies.

Tips for downhill mountain bike braking?

I will be introducing myself to the world of trail riding on a dual-suspension mongoose “status” 26″ bike with front and rear disc brakes (not sure of the type of pads or the material, though). Yes, the bike is cheap and probably built with crappy materials (especially the rear, coil spring suspension), but it rides beautifully and its all that i have. So i was wondering, if i were to go on a long, steep downhill trail, can the disc brake take a constant, weak braking, or do i have to brake in short bursts. I am used to riding machines that have engine braking and i just dont trust mountain bike brakes; disc, or not.

oh.. i guess i shoul have said that they are not hydraulic. They are cable-style brake lines (not sure if thats good or bad…)

Question about Costa Rica Tours?

I will be traveling alone to Costa Rica this June and will be there for a week. I’m 27 years old and I’m pretty active. Some of the activities in Costa Rica that I’m interested in doing include mountain biking, white water rafting and zip lining through the rain forest. Basically I’m wondering whether it is better to book these activities separately or as part of a multi-day tour package. I’ve noticed that some of the all-inclusive tours tend to cater towards older adults who might be less inclined to seek adventure. I actually want to experience the culture and I really have no interest in being pampered or “nickled and dimed” at some fancy resort. Is it better to have all these tours booked ahead of time or should I play it be ear and book upon arrival? Any tips or advice is appreciated. Also, if anyone has any adventure tour suggestions that involve camping, biking, etc that might be up my alley let me know. Thanks.

Mountain bike gear problem?

I have a 21 speed mountain bike, and something seems to be wrong. As I am running through the gears and have the gear in front set up to the largest one, the amount of force I put in does not make sense. In the rear, gear one two and three gradually increase the amount of force necessary to move the pedals, but as a i shift from 4-7 it seems like it is back into gear one and i notice no change in difficulty.

any suggestions?

No, when I am in the largest gear upfront, I cannot shift lower than 3rd gear in the rear

Whats so bad about $100 mountain bikes?

I see a lotta people slamming cheap department store bikes. I personally have a hardtail KENT bike that I’ve put about 2000 miles on, with many of those miles being gained through moderately rough riding. I bought it at Big 5 for 100 bucks. It hasn’t given me any problems besides having to adjust the brakes occasionally.

So why all the hate on these bikes?
