How do you fix a Gear Changer on a Mountain bike?

Actually the Gear Changer itself isn’t broken. The front gear just wont go up to the highest gear. I tried loosening the screws on the actual “thing” that pushes the chain up and down the gears and it only increases the range toward the lower gears, and the highest range only takes me to the second highest gear. I hope that makes sense! lol what can i do!?

Mountain Bike Gearing?

I am about to go buy a new Mountain bike. I havn’t had one in a while. I used to ride allot of trails, and some roads.. I forgot what I had, a iron Horse Point 3 or something. a $1,000 bike or so.

Anyways when I go spend only $500-$700, I want my 29th or 24th gear to be very high. My legs are strong, and I like to cruise fast, but pedaling hard. of course that has to do with the number of teeth on the cassette for that given gear.

When I go look around, what do I look for? I got a cheap mountain bike with X amount of teeth on it’s 21st gear, can I just compare my new bike’s teeth to this cheap one?

Am I depressed at 14, or am I making it all up?

I was home-schooled until the 6th grade, and then my mom and ***hole, abusive step-dad got divorced, so I had to start going to public school. This year, (9th grade) I began homeschooling online with this really cheesy program. The only guidelines are that you have to be logged in for 25 hours a week and have to be completed with your class in 18 weeks. Just so you know, I’m really bad at making and sticking to my own schedule. I am an avid mountain biker and racer. I have held the position of fastest girl under the age of 18 in Arizona for four years now. Last June, I had a national race in Colorado that I lost horribly to. So that is where it started. Proud, proud me was shot down and I dramatically lost self esteem. In school last year, I had one friend, and we loved each other. We were like two pieces of wood standing up against one another because we both had no where else to go. She is still my only friend and now I hardly ever see her. I almost never get out of the house. I had to fight with my mom to get my own guinea pig so that I at least had something alive to talk to and keep myself busy with during the day. I used to devour books, but I slowly started loosing interest in them and can’t focus on them anymore. I got more and more off-track with school. Interest in mountain biking went from a 10 to a zero. Training is really, really boring, my mom is annoying and forceful about it. She wants to do endurance, 24 hour races with me – I now think they are boring, long and pointless. I thought maybe my interest would be regained if we took a more fun side to it and did out-of-state races and just rode on cool trails in Arizona and surrounding areas. My mother practically refuses to cooperate. She wants to turn it into a more “fun family thing” with crappy training things that we can do together and hot, boring races to do together that I’ve been doing for the past SEVEN YEARS now. Still yells at me for not rolling(a treadmill for bikes). I hate fun family things. I hate rolling. At home, I’m expected to take care of the house, my brother and dinner until my mom gets home, mon, tues, wed at 7 at night. I don’t blame her for working late – it isn’t her fault, but she puts all responsibilities on me and plays that “I work all day long” card whenever she can.

Anyways.

Lately, I have lost all interest in riding, reading, going out with friends, doing anything with my family(I never really like doing anything with them just because my mom and brother act like they were frikin made for each other and I’m left out and I’m stubborn about feeling left out) but now I REALLY don’t want to do anything with them. I have lots of aches and pains. I’ve been staying up really late and sleeping in really late. No tossing and turning but lots of very avid dreams that are really weird, confusing and a bit creepy at times. I really don’t care how my mom punishes me as long as she doesn’t take away my guinea pig. I feel like crying randomly a lot. When I try to tell my mom how I feel, I am lost for words and don’t know what to say and she takes me as a joke. I am over 50% behind in schoolwork. All training has ceased. I’m not allowed to communicate with anyone (my mom took away all phoning privileges as well as email) especially anyone that I could maybe talk to for comfort, such as my cousin or my best friend. I feel like they wouldn’t understand anyways. I haven’t had suicidal thoughts or weight loss, but I do feel tired, down, sad, have stomach aches, my eating habits fluctuate(one day I will pig out, the next I won’t eat anything, rarely do I eat normally). I have no idea what I want to do with my life, at the present or in the future. I told my mom that I need to figure things out and she said “Figure WHAT out? Figure out your life that is 4-SIX years away? You won’t have a future if you won’t do school.” I don’t really care. What’s the point? Reality sucks. No matter what, life will suck when I get older. The government is taking away our rights, keeping those with money down, so I will never be able to be well off anyways.

I can’t talk to my mom about feelings. She has no communication skills when it comes to that – instead she just takes everything as fact – like she thinks I’m not doing school because I’m lazy and selfish. I think she just barely started to notice something was wrong because she has just been punishing and yelling like crazy, and this morning, she was yelling like usual, when she said “I think it’s really weird that you won’t do school.” as if she were asking herself that question.

Am I faking it, though? Am I making it up, creating my own pity-fest? Am I just being dramatic? AM I lazy and selfish? I just don’t know anymore. Life sucks. That’s all I can say. And I don’t want to loose my guinea pig. I’m trying really hard to get c
Oh yeah, and if I am depressed, how do I tell my mom in a way that she will BELIEVE me, or just – what do I do?

Also, if I’m NOT depressed, do you have any life suggestions? I am completely lost as to what to do.

I’m trying really hard to get caught up with school work, but these feelings of tiredness, sadness, lack of motivation and not being able to focus are working just as hard against me.
Also, I told my mom I need to enroll in public school next semester, but she has been starting fights with me about it and saying how I’ll get a crappy education and be around a bunch of bad people and how school sucks and blah blah blah. I do think that one of the ways to help myself would be to get out of the homeschooling situation I’m in. And she thinks I just want to be by my best friend(I would be going to the same school as her). I mean, that’s part of it, but not all of it.

Mountain bike gear problems / shifting?

I have a Giant 24speed Mt Bike and the shifter on the left hand side won’t work. It clicks but the derailer/chain doesn’t do anything. First of all is there a name for those gears? Is it the high or low or just the left hand side gears? Well to explain there are 3 rings on one end and 8 rings on the rear wheel, it’s the 3 rings that won’t shift…it’s stuck on 1.

I was able to take a look and I see that there seems to be a lot of slack in the cable. I just used my bike the other day and it was working fine. Then I go out today and it wouldn’t shift which seems odd.

Its dark out now I can’t see much and I’m really hoping it’s just a matter of me tightening that cable.

Do you need special screwdrivers to fix the derailers or tighten those cables?

-How about some opinions on Mt Bikes…My Giant is a hand me down from my brother. It’s worked great over the years and I would consider my self an extreme rider ie: I ride down the steepest and bumpiest trails hitting huge rocks and roots and the bike seems to be in great shape with little maintenance. I know people who hit these bumps and their chains fall off. If I wanted to get a new bike what would you recommend for an extreme rider for under $1,000? Thanks all for your advice and happy trails.
Oh also, what sets say a $1,000 mt bike aside from a $300 one? Is it that you’re just paying extra to have something lighter?

I’m a college student and need to get a bike to ride around campus, it seems like most people here have mountain bikes. Unfortunately, my budget’s only about $150 bucks, or even less. There are a few bikes at walmart that I could get, but I’ve been reading terrifying things about walmart bikes on the internet. Do you think a cheap bike from walmart would be OK for riding around campus? Or do you have a recommendation on where to buy a cheap one?

Hi,
I’ve been trying to do a bunny hop of my mountain bike, but I’m having trouble lifting my front wheel high enough…At most, it is only moving about 5-8cm or so off the ground, so I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips or instructions to help me? I have a hardtail mountain bike with a 14” frame and 26” wheels. And also, should I be on a low or high gear? Thanks

How close to the ground should my mountain bike’s pedals be?

My pedals drag on the ground on moderate turns and it’s almost impossible to pump without hitting rocks when mountain biking. In the vertical position, the bottom pedal is only 3 inches from the ground. How low should they be? From what I remember, last fall I did the standard sizing tests in the store and it is my size. I’m 5′11″ 155lbs and the bike is 26″.

I took an online P.E. course for school three summers ago that was an introduction in cycling. The handbook required to read introduced the different types of biking and safety etc and ever since then, I’ve wanted to become more serious about it.
I like racing and street riding but I can’t get a grasp at mountain biking (funny story)
Anyway, how do i get started?
from bikes, to organizations, to clubs, to informational books i’m just looking on general information to crack down on a new hobby
After reading a couple answers, I realize that I should have specified that I’m past the interest of “casual” riding. I have bike and I ride it, but how do I start racing? how do I train for it?

Should I go on an $86 bike ride when I have college coming up, should I work this summer?
I live with my family, I am 19 year old guy. I just did the Seattle to Portland (STP) ride, 202 miles on my road bike in one day!! It is wonderful. I love to ride. I can ride alone for free practicing, but the feeling of big rides are fun for my family and me to enjoy. I am so fit to do them. But, here is my case: I am a money saving freak, but I have not job. I gave up one day a week due to partial layoff, and I also boss troubles wanting to fire me. So I just quit, but I kind of regret it due to money. I have $7700 in savings, my tuition will run $6000/year for two more years at a university plus about $1000-$2000/year for books. Plus I will be living at home, but need to commute by ferry which is $100-$200/month. Yes, money. I had $8400+ just months ago, but spent $400 on the STP ride. I just bought an $86 registration to another ride in the mountains. I am considering a fun 170 miler for $86. I am spending, yes. It is kind of pricey to participate in these rides, but should I quit spending?? I hear my family offers to help. But I may move out winter quarter. $$$, eek. I have earned scholarships, $1250 recently, $6000 last year. I may or may not earn any more, it is hard these days economically. I have an offer for some under the table work, but just one day. Probably $80. My mother says money is tight talks about bills (we’ve had some big ones recently). It is just her and my father is divorced from her, pays nothing. Yet she buys lawn products/shops for such things. I am old enough to buy my own stuff.

My job: there is a job at target, the only opening I have found. It is a town away though. My mother does not like having her car (which I drive) away from the house all day. She “needs it.” But college is starting again in the fall, it would only be for a month or two, little time for training and such. What would you do?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO, IN MY SHOES JUST TRYING TO GET MY MIND AWAY FROM SCHOOL ENJOY WHAT TIME I HAVE LEFT??

Trek Mountain bike gear slipping…Why the heck?

I just bought a new trek mtn bike last year and despite them giving me a new chain and the “pros” adjusting the dang thing forever, whenever the chain is on the smallest sprocket it slippes a lot when I crank on the pedals at all. It’s horrible. I think now it is either the rear derailer or the sprocket itself. PLEASE HELP!

I’ve got this Mountai Bike, Pretty big Considering I’m 6′4 now. The problem is, I see people popping wheelies like no big deal, yet only if i stand up lean back and pull with all my might, i only get in an accident or barely get it off the ground. I know mountain bikes aren’t designed for that, but i wanna do it atleast once and i dont have a light trick bike to do it on. It’s heavy, so don’t assume im not trying xD.
ill try it out on uphill. I’ve never really been the bike kinda guy so i’m somewhat new to this. thanks for the tips except the dude at the top >.>
