I’m in the market for a low-cost mountain bike. obviously I’d like things like disc brakes and rear suspension but price takes precedence. I plot on frequently doing normal commuting type riding but also urban assault type riding and wheelies. I was thinking in this area getting one of the Next mtn bikes from walmart for $120 but have ready some terrible reviews. What are some excellent used mountain bikes to look for and where?

If you pay a low-cost price, you will get a low-cost bike. It will be heavy, and probably poorly assembled. Parts will wear out quickly, and require replacement. There is no secret formula for building a excellent bike that will allow one company to build something better at a much lower price. In low priced bikes, less is more. Avoid suspension, it will add weight and reduce the feature of all the other parts. There is a excellent reason why a $120 bike gets terrible reviews, it is a cut of junk. Reckon of your bike as a long term investment. If you buy feature at the start, you won’t be back in the market for another one next year
Ooh – Wal-Mart – BAD! Full suspension bikes (excellent ones) start at in this area $1,000. I’d stick with a excellent hardtail & look through craigslist for names like Raleigh, Trek, Particular, Giant, etc. A used Schwinn from a real bike shop should be OK. From a discount store – run away.
If you can find a way to add more $$$ to the budget & can assemble one yourself, sometimes a fantastic deal can be found on the Internet. Just know what frame size you need in advance. Also, when on-line, check availability in your size first thing. Many times, all they will have left is large or small frames. Check Amazon.com, Performance Bike, & Nashbar.com.
Buying a feature bike is a excellent investment. That $120 NEXT bike would sell the very next day on craigslist for maybe $50.
